Matancherry Palace

 
The Mattancherry palace with its medieval charm is situated at Palace Road, Mattancherry,10km from Ernakulam city, Kochi, Kerala. Built by the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Kochi Veera Kerala Varma (1537-65) in 1555 AD, it took on its present popular name 'Dutch Palace' after 1663, when the Dutch carried out some extensions and renovations in the palace. The rajas also made more improvements to it. Today, it is a portrait gallery of the Cochin Rajas and notable for some of the best mythological murals in India, which are in the best traditions of Hindu Temple Art.

The entrance to the Mattancherry Palace compound is through two arches which are typically Portuguese in character and a flight of steps through a portico on the south, gives access to a suite of public rooms on the upper level of the palace.

Chinese Fishing Nets

The Chinese fishing nets in Cochin Harbor were set up between 1350 to 1450. The beaches of Cochin are beautifully lined with these Chinese nets. Chinese fishing nets abound in the Vasco-da-Gama Square near the Fort Kochi. They can also be seen in and around Bastion Bungalow, Santa Cruz Basilica and VOC Gate.

Chinese fishing nets in Cochin are locally known as Cheenavala. In Cochin, the Chinese nets are suspended in the mid air all along the coast. The nets are set up on bamboo or teak poles and are basically fixed land installations. These nets are horizontally suspended over the sea, giving an appearance of huge hammock. For balance, these nets are counter balanced by stones tied to ropes. Each net spreads over an area of about 20 meters.

Willingdon Island

The Willingdon Island, a man made island had been constructed by the materials dredged during the deepening of the Cochin port. The island is named after the former viceroy of India. Today, it is the commercial and industrial hub of Cochin and is also home to some of the best hotels, commercial offices and also important industrial headquarters. It is also one of the major artificial ports in India that serves as a principal connection to the other seaports of the world. The Willingdon Island is connected to the mainland or the Ernakulam District by the road and railway Venduruthy Bridge.

This island is a hub of activity with a number of offices, branches of national and international banks, travel agencies and souvenir shops warehouses and one cannot possibly miss visiting the place while being in the city of Kochi, if just for some necessity.
